The South Devon Railway Museum
Located in the former goods shed at Buckfastleigh station, the South Devon Railway Museum warmly invites you to discover the fascinating history of the Ashburton branch and its significance to our region.
Our aim is to paint a vivid picture of the railway’s journey in South Devon, from its very first appearance through the broad gauge era, the Great Western and British Railways, and into the heritage era of the Dart Valley Railway and South Devon Railway. We share this story through an impressive collection of artifacts, including photographs, posters, and timetables.
A highlight of our museum is Tiny, the only surviving broad gauge locomotive, which proudly stands as a testament to our railway heritage. You’ll also find the 0-4-0 Peckett named Ashley, a beloved steam engine that spent its working life at Exeter Gas Works, allowing children of all ages to explore how a steam engine works. Our interactive exhibits on track and signaling will spark curiosity and delight!
Don’t miss the captivating display of photographs that chronicles the construction of the original South Devon Railway line, giving you a glimpse into the past.
The South Devon Railway Museum is a perfect destination for visiting schools and groups, as well as a charming place to learn about the local railways and their important roles in our communities. We’re open throughout the year, so come and visit us—we can’t wait to share our love of railway history with you!
