Freight Train Experience
Embark on a one-of-a-kind adventure with a return trip between Buckfastleigh and Totnes aboard a traditional guard’s Brake Van, pulled by either a steam or diesel locomotive. Experience the journey from the open veranda of an authentic 1930s ‘Toad’ or 1950s ‘Shark’, offering unmatched panoramic views of the stunning countryside and our heritage railway.
On one leg of the trip, you’ll ride at the rear of the train, and on the return, you’ll be right behind the locomotive for an exhilarating close-up experience. Your ticket also includes unlimited travel on our other passenger services throughout the day, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore the local area at your leisure.
Please note, spaces for this unique experience are extremely limited.
When booking, you will choose which Freight Train to travel in. While some covered seating is available, the best experience comes from standing on the open veranda, so be sure to dress for the weather. Due to the occasional jostling of the train, this experience may not be suitable for young children or those with mobility issues. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Freight Train Experience will be hauled by either a Great Western Railway steam locomotive or a British Railways diesel locomotive. The allocation of locomotive type can be found in the event session description.
