Rails and Ales Gala 2012
The South Devon Railway's hugely popular annual Rails & Ales gala takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 24th to Monday 27th.
This event, which is organised by the Devon Diesel Society, has grown in size and popularity over the last few years and will combine the excellent new bar facility at Staverton, where an old Goods Shed has been sympathetically converted into a new bar and waiting room, with a frequent train service between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. The best way to get to the festival at Staverton (which has extremely limited parking) is by South Devon Railway train from either Buckfastleigh, where there is ample car parking, or Totnes.
Train services will be run by a variety of locomotives, and those due to be in use over the weekend are:
• GWR 0-6-0PT No. 1369
• GWR 0-6-0 No. 3205
• GWR 0-6-0PT No. 6430 on auto trains
• BR Class 20 No. D8110
• BR Class 122 Railcar No. W55000
As for the beers and ciders, there will be 46 ales and five ciders available from the bar at Staverton during the weekend. On Saturday to Monday, there will also be a Pimms tent at Staverton. Opening hours are from 11.00am until dusk.
On Saturday 25th there will be a barbecue in the evening and the popular quiz will be held on the evening of Sunday 26th night.
Come to the festival by train
On the Saturday night, a through train will be running from Exeter St Davids to Staverton, formed of a First Great Western Class 150/2, with pick ups on the outward and set downs on the return, at Dawlish, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot and Totnes. Further details on timings are on the poster. If you wish to travel on this service, you are advised to book in advance by calling us on 0843 357 1420. Seats are sold on a first come, first served basis. If seats remain, tickets will be available from on-train staff on the night.
If you can display the poster, it can be printed off from here.
