Pump trolley challenge in aid of Buckfastleigh swimming pool

On Saturday, 7th February 2015, the railway was pleased to be able to support the local Buckfastleigh community in its fundraising efforts to save the town's swimming pool from closure.

The “Pump trolley challenge” was set up. Teams of four were invited to try their skill and test their stamina powering the pump trolley over a total course of about 1 ¾ miles.

In addition, there were painting activities for the children in the museum and the Buckfastleigh Station Group provided a barbecue. Commentary on the progress of each team was provided by John Brodribb.

Although it was a beautiful bright morning, there was a bitter icy chill to the wind.

As well as the main event, local fire, police and ambulance vehicles were on display in the station forecourt, and the Torbay Owl & Co group brought a selection of owls, plus a Harris Hawk. The winning team completed the challenge in a time of 4 minutes 29 seconds.

A fun time was had by all and the well-attended event raised over £870 towards their goal.

Well done to all who took part!
