Scary Halloween night train on the South Devon Railway

and ‘half price’ weekend

Halloween – 1                                                                                  13 October 2014

Preparations are well in hand at the South Devon Railway (SDR) for the steam line’s annual, scary ‘Halloween Express’ train for families on the evening of Halloween Night itself - Friday 31 October - which features a spooky night time run in the dark down the seven-mile route, complete with scary food and entertainment at Totnes.

The ‘Halloween Express’ leaves ‘Bloodthirsty Buckfastleigh’ at 6.30pm, passing ‘Scary Staverton’ complete with ghosts on the platform en route, and arriving at ‘Terrifying Totnes’ at 7.00pm. The Halloween Express leaves Totnes at 8.30pm, returning to Buckfastleigh at 9.00pm.

The wearing of scary Halloween costumes and fancy dress by all attending is encouraged as can be seen in the attached images and poster from last year at, Halloween themed music will also form part of the evening at both stations and on the train too.

On arrival at Totnes, families will be invited to take part in ‘trick or treat’ games set up on the platform, plus there will be ghost stories in the station building before food is served as part of the all-in ticket.

Speaking about the event, SDR Retail & Catering Manager Graham Coates said: “Our evening Halloween Express train has become a popular, fun family night out during October Half Term week and is enjoyed by all who come along to join in and enjoy the Halloween themed events and food.

“So, following the scary theme, we will be serving up ‘Gruesome grub’ of ‘Beef Ghoulash, Beastly Burgers and Horrid Hot Dogs’, plus a ‘Vile Vegetarian’ option at Totnes.                                  More follows

“All of the food is included in the ticket price and will be served by ‘wicked witches’, along with some scary ghost story telling and trick or treats to add to the spooky atmosphere.

“There’ll be some other fun events too, including apple bopping, jelly dipping, ‘Jack o Lanterns’ treasure hunt, and pin the tail on the cat game, plus guess the weight of the pumpkin. A small fee will apply to some of the games and there’ll be a stall selling sweets, glow sticks and creepy crawlies for children.

“There’ll also be Vlad’s real ale bar and buffet on board the train for the adults, and with an all-inclusive price for the return train journey, food and entertainment of £14.00 for adults and £10.00 for children, this is a good value-for-money night out.”

Tickets must be pre-booked as they are selling fast and are available on line now at Book online or by calling us on 01364 644370.

And, over the weekend of Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 November, the SDR will run its special bargain ‘Half Price event which traditionally marks the end of the SDR’s main season of running steam trains.

On both days, passengers will be able to tuck into a cut-price steam feast which will see nine trains running each day over the pretty seven-mile line from Buckfastleigh to Totnes that will appeal to families and enthusiasts alike.

Coming at the end of school half-term week, the South Devon Railway always likes to mark the end of each main season with a special event to say ‘Thank You’ to the line’s many regular visitors, local people and volunteers who all love the authentic recreation of the old Great Western Railway and BR Western Region steam era.

And with the continuing economic problems, the timing of the regular event is ideal for cash-conscious families as all fares will be at half-price. More follows
